Joint Injections

Dr. Brittany Factor is a Colorado equine vet, based in Colorado Springs, with over 20 years of experience within the equine industry.  The most common area in the horse she must address therapeutically is the joint. Over time many issues can develop within an equine joint. Of these issues, the most common are those of a degenerative nature such as osteoarthritis, which if left untreated can lead to destruction of proper biomechanical form and function. ESS believes that healthy joint function means a healthy and sound horse. However, given the nature of activities that are required of performance horses, specific joints are more susceptible to damage from wear and tear. While the cure for these issues are sparse, they can however be successfully managed. Managing osteoarthritis conditions begins with diagnosis and ends with a customized treatment from a Colorado equine vet in our practice.

Osteoarthritis is a very common cause of reduced performance or lameness in horses and can be treated with a multitude of modalities. Joint injections with corticosteroids and hyaluronic acid can be used as a short-term palliative therapy to reduce inflammation. Please review our regenerative therapies page for more information regarding IRAP therapy, a great alternative to frequent traditional joint injections with corticosteroid/hyaluronic acid.

Please also remember that joint injections are commonly combined with other methods in our Colorado equine vet practice in a multimodal approach.

Some other methods are listed below.

  1. Rest

  2. Cold therapy (please read about our new Game Ready cold therapy compression system)

  3. Anti-inflammatories like phenylbutazone (bute), flunixin meglumine (banamine), or firocoxib (Equioxx).
